MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA SPRING 2009

I first was turned onto Maisons Margielas clothes when I read Nicolas Ghesquiere, the head designer at Balenciaga, say how it was his favorite designer. Since then I have really been impressed by his runway shows as well as the ready-to-wear stuff I have seen in stores in New York. Following in Rei Kawakubos footsteps, Margiela started designing clothes to "deconstruct" luxury fashion as we know it, evolting against the fashion world with garments of oversized proportions such as long arms, and with linings, seams and hems on the outside. Throughout his career, Martin Margiela has maintained an extremely low profile. He has never had his picture taken and remains backstage after his shows. All media contact is dealt with via fax. Maison Martin Margiela’s ultradiscreet trademark consists of a piece of cloth with the numbers 0-23. The badge is attached to the inside with its four little white pick stitches, exposed to the outside on unlined garments. These photos are all from the spring 2009 runway show. I really like the way all of the faces are covered.
